Energy Efficiency in Affordable Multifamily Housing

Utility incentive/rebate programs and financing options are possibilities to make multifamily housing energy efficient. The Minnesota Multifamily Affordable Housing Energy Network will be presenting on energy effeciency opportunities for multifamily housing on Friday, May 12. This presentation will also explain how energy efficiency can lead to healthy housing. 

Katherine Teiken is an Energy Efficiency Fellow for Minnesota Housing. Katherine works with owners and managers of affordable multifamily buildings to provide education and resources to help implement energy and water efficiency retrofits. Part of her role at Minnesota Housing is to co-lead a statewide network called the Minnesota Multifamily Affordable Housing Energy Network.

Ben Passer joined Fresh Energy in May 2015, and leads Fresh Energy's work to expand energy efficiency in affordable multifamily housing, as well as policies to support access for low- and moderate-income households in community solar programs. Ben has testified before the Public Utilities Commission and also has experience serving as Fresh Energy's attorny in utility rate cases.

General Manager of Blue Earth Light and Water to Present

The general manager of Blue Earth Light and Water, Tim Stoner, will be presenting to the Region Nine Renewable Energy Task Force. Blue Earth Light and Water has been serving the Blue Earth, MN community since 1895 as a municipal utility operated under the direction of the Board of Public Works. The board is an independently elected board.  

As Blue Earth Light and Water’s general manager since 2013, Tim Stoner is responsible for all aspects of the both electric and water utilities. Tim also serves on the Executive Board of Central Municipal Power Agency/Services where he is currently vice president. Prior to joining Blue Earth Light and Water, Tim worked as a regional coordinator with Minnesota Municipal Utility Association for 15 years.  He has assisted municipal utilities across southern Minnesota in understanding compliance regulations.

The Story on Red Wing's Major Energy Action Plan

When cities make energy efficiency a priority amazing things can happen. For example, the City of Red Wing utilized renewable-energy grants and incentives to save 17,000 residents at least $1.1 million in future taxes. The city has made significant changes to maintenance and infrastructure including updates to the city hall, auditorium, library and the public works building. These changes have put Red Wing on the path to 100% renewable, sustainable, and resilient energy facilities. 

With 33 years of public service to the City of Red Wing, Jay McCleary was one of several civic leaders to accomplish the major energy efficiency and renewable energy projects throughout the city. McCleary will share the city's story about their initiatives and outcomes on December 9th in Mankato.
